Room 101 Revisited
by Dorothy M. Getchell

“Who controls the past, controls the future.” “Who controls the present, controls the past”
-- George Orwell 1984

Dear reader I would like take you on a journey. Come with me to your future, my present day, and be scared. “From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Brother………greetings”

Diary entry of April 4, 2084

Clouds gather in the sky again today but there will be no rain. The clouds will not darken nor will the sun break out to brighten my existence. The clouds will pass and the sky will remain muted Grey as it is intended. The rain has long since been eliminated. Atmospheric control is essential to our well being. Climate affects our productivity.

I saw a child today. It looked to be 6 or 7 years. It is rare to see a child out of the creation center and I turned quickly without thinking and then back again hoping no one noticed. I must not look up at anything especially a child. What if the child saw me and thought I was of some interest and looked back. What harm I could have done. The child should only see what he is programmed to see.

Children are protected now. Genetic selection of the embryos eliminates all but the best. Insuring our future. Bar coded at birth to protect them from the likes of me. Their existence will be tracked and monitored. Their perfection will determine their survival. The codes implanted on their arms will be their means of getting food and drink.

They will be allowed only what is required of their bodies, no more …no less. They will be educated in the way of the Society they will be taught to obey. They will know no other way.

There are no wars. Everyone lives in peace. There is no reason to fight. We are all the same. I have no wants. I have no desires. I have no dreams. I am the same as the others.

I will work, they will provide. I have nothing to contribute. I am nothing. I will be nothing. Nothing is expected from me.

Hunger, disease, crime are all in the past. They are the horrors that serve as punishment to those few remaining citizens who remain unenlightened.

Take heed, The future is now.
